The United Nations predicts that over the next twenty five years nearly all population growth will be in the cities of the developing world and that by 2030 60% of the world's population will live in cities. Experts also predict food shortages as a result of climate change combined with increases in urban populations. Peru is an excellent example of increases in urban population and is a candidate for especially intense impacts of climate change on agriculture so it is important to learn more about possibilities for urban agriculture.
A sustainable city must provide both food security and environmental health. Fortunately, urban agriculture is increasingly on the agendas of citizens and there is a great deal of experience. The UNDP estimates that about fifteen percent of the world's food is now grown in urban areas. That figure continues to rise as citizens and planners begin to understand that growing food in the city can do a lot to replenish the spirit, stimulate civic participation and care for the earth while helping to meet food needs.
This Web Scout provides background information from a few key organizations (FAO, USDA, IRDC, AAAS) as well as some examples of innovative projects: school and community gardens, design of vertical farms and rooftop gardens. I am including quite a few links for rooftop gardening in the expectation that construction in many cities in Peru lends itself to gardening despite the more extreme conditions of sun and wind frequent on rooftops. There are also links to case studies of programs sponsored by cities to promote farming in cities as well as links to learn some urban gardening techniques.
