With the advent of Tiger Woods, golf has become a global sport. Unfortunately, in Peru it is still on the low priority list.
Lima´s six clubs, Lima Golf, Los Inkas, La Planicie, Villa, Los Andes, and the Granja Azul, are all private, and membership can run as high as $40,000 dollars.
For those who are here for a short time, or who want to learn the game to continue back home, there is now a small golf academy at the Jockey Club in Monterrico.
Victor Yupanqui, an old and experienced caddie, has turned an abandoned area of the Jockey Club behind its tennis courts into a practice area, including tees and a net plus a green and a sand bunker. Victor, a professional, is accompanied by other professionals who can train children and adults in this frustrating game that seeks to put a small white ball in a minute hole on 18 occasions during four hours of walking on a golf course.
Teachers are available every day until late afternoon, and an hour costs $22 dollars. If you are already a golfer, there is a chance Victor can get you "invited" to one of Lima´s beautiful courses with a member. If you are interested, call Jim at 445-4019, or 9918-6793 for details. |
