We all are preoccupied by the earthquake and its aftermath in the south and all feel a need to help, in any way possible. Last week, we had the opportunity to drive down to the Chincha Alta area with two of our members taking two cars full of goods for the victims of this tragedy.
We spent the day, first sorting through the food, clothes and educational supplies that had been donated, then accompanying the farm employees to each of the soup kitchens that had been targeted to receive the donations.
It was heart-warming to see the children's faces light up when they saw the truck and they were very good at forming a line to receive their share. We had 10 kitchens, each run by a community leader, and most of the food stuffs were handed over to them directly, to share with the rest of the neighbours. We now have 15 kitchens and we expect that number to increase. No government aid has been received by them – yet – so our aid is very necessary.
In between stops, we had time to visit the Casa Hacienda San Jose and to view first hand the extensive damage done by the original quake as well as the subsequent shakes. The hotel is closed and will take at least a year to repair. We have included the 17 families who were dependent on their salaries at the hotel as a new soup kitchen. Every bit of help is appreciated.
Your response to the appeal for donations, either in goods or in cash, has been heartwarming and immensely gratifying. Any and all donations are eagerly accepted by the ACAP office and we can assure you that they are delivered directly to the victims, without undue delay and without the presence of “sticky fingers.” This is an ongoing project and the need still exists for aid. Please drop off anything you feel you would be willing to donate here at the office, at any time of the day, any day as the custodians are well versed in their receiving roles.
Thank you all.
