Web Scout
Make the Write Impression Resources on the Web

By Marcia Koth de Paredes

The basic missions of universities are to prepare students and to expand the frontiers of the various academic disciplines. Most universities world-wide have also decided that they should encourage discussion of issues of public concern, do research that informs the policy process and carry out some form of advocacy to speak truth to power. Their efforts can be a great help to any organization or individual advocating for public policy improvements.

Universities realize that they need to limit the number of issues and methods to ensure academic excellence and the appropriate use of limited resources. A university, however, may have more than one center and since there are thousands of universities in the U.S., thousands of centers now exist. The centers frequently, though not always, do several things: degree programs, short courses-seminars-workshops-congresses, research, consulting activities, organization of events, maintenance of archives, data banks and Internet portals that advocate or organize information to aid in the policy process.

This WebScout selects a few examples of university-sponsored policy centers to demonstrate activities and methods to show how these centers focus the issues, sometimes in very different ways. If you are involved in advocacy, you will find it helpful to be in touch with centers. I would be pleased to help you search for centers working on issues that interest you.
