Canada supports educational project for civil defence forces Initiative to raise local authorities' awareness of human rights
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is funding a project worth US$ 86,000, to encourage local and judicial authorities, the police and ronderos to incorporate human rights based on customary justice into the work of citizen security services.
Ronderos are locally-organised civil defence forces that exist in many outlying villages in Peru and in some suburbs of metropolitan Lima.
The project is being developed in the regions of La Libertad, Ancash and Junín. It is implemented by the Instituto Peruano de Educación en Derechos Humanos y la Paz (IPEDEHP) along with the Ministry of Education through its Permanent Secretariat for the Human Rights Commission.
Through workshops and work activities, and by exploring legislative and administrative proposals, the initiative aims to develop a citizen security plan for each region.
