Canada promotes corporate social responsibility in Peru
Representatives from civil society, government and mining companies participate
in workshop
On March 27th, more than 40 local and regional government representatives from the Peruvian regions of Ancash, La Libertad, Cajamarca and Junín sat down with more than 30 mining company officials, congress and civil society representatives in a day-long corporate social responsibility (CSR) workshop sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Peru.
“We supported this event to contribute to a productive exchange of ideas among partners that share a common goal: improving the quality of life for mining communities”, said Canada's Ambassador to Peru, Geneviève des Rivières. The event, “Exploring investment opportunities for the development of communities”, was organised with the support of Peru 2021, a Peruvian NGO.
Government representatives and mining officials discussed the most appropriate way to use regional development funds derived from mining company revenues to benefit local communities. The participants prioritized the fight against poverty and malnutrition, education, and sustainable and productive economic development, including tourism. They emphasized the importance of strengthening local and regional government institutions.
Canada is one of the leading sources of foreign investment in mining in Peru. Part of government revenues from mining companies' activities is destined to regional development. In addition, many mining companies agreed last year to make additional voluntary payments to Peru and these funds are also to be used for community development. Investing these funds as effectively as possible is the challenge faced by local and regional governments and mining companies alike.
