Odds & Ends
Project Omega

By Jim Plunkett

How the Incas and pre-Colombians were able to determine the worth of natural products derived from native plants is beyond me. There were no high tech laboratories, no marketing firms involved, and we can only assume they scored using a hit and miss process. How many natives died as a result of experiments by local herbal doctors we will never know.

One of the many fantastic plants used by these cultures as witnessed by evidence found in ancient graves and expressed on their ceramics was a seed called Inka Inchi, containing one of the richest oils in the world fit for human consumption.

The following is a report based on a study by a local firm, Agroindustrias Amazonicas, that is in the process of reviving the plant in order to commercialize it worldwide. Yesterday I found a bottle of Inka Inchi oil on display in a natural food shop and with a tablespoon a day, you can definitely “ keep the doctor away”. I share the report with you.

InchiINCA INCHI

Plukenetia volubilis linneo, or INCA INCHI, is an Amazon plant known to the natives for thousands of years and was used by the pre-incas and the Incas as witnessed in ceramics found in the tombs. The first scientific mention of INCA INCHI was in 1980 as a result of an analysis of oil and protein content undertaken by Cornell University in the United States that demonstrated that the seeds of INCA INCHI have a high content of protein (33 %) and oil (49%). The local developer has found varieties with oil content as high as 54%. The protein presents an important content of *essential and non-essential amino acids, is rich in vitamin A and E in quantities sufficient for human health, contains 562 calories, and has an iodine indicator is a high 192. INCA INCHI is ideal for improving the diet of children, adolescents, and adults, the recovery of the ill, and especially in the diet of the elderly.

The seed, INCA INCHI , exceeds in a larger percentage of unsaturated fatty acids and in minor percentage of saturated fats, all the oil seeds utilized in the world in the production of oils for human consumption and in protein for the production of protein flour.

INCA INCHI OIL

Of all the natural sources known, INCA INCHI oil has the largest content of Omega 3. In comparison with all the oils utilized in the world for human consumption, INCA INCHI oil is the richest in unsaturated fatty acids reaching as high as 93.6%.
'
By nature and the applied technology for the ecological cultivation and industrial extraction of this seed, it is a high quality oil for human consumption and better health and is the best oil for human domestic consumption, industry, cosmetics, and medicinal applications, exceeding all the oils presently in use such as olive, sunflower, soy, corn, palm, peanut oils, etc. It`s many uses include: cholesterol reducer, salad oil, cooking oil, to enrich industrial foodstuffs with Omega 3, and in the production of cosmetics, nutrients, and medicines.

PROJECT OMEGA

The cultivation and industrialization of INCA INCHI is of vital importance for world food supply and health due to it's high content of valuable nutrients and essential linoleic fatty acids, alpha linolinic Omega 3. Currently a team is working in the Peruvian jungle and with local laboratories to promote and develop the investigation, cultivation, industrialization, and the commercialization of INCA INCHI, it's oil and protein flour. To achieve it's objectives, the company is developing PROJECT OMEGA to cultivate INCA INCHI, the production of oils, torts, protean flours and bioactive elements.

For it's valuable contribution to the world food supply and health, INCA INCHI oil is expected have a large demand in the world market. The Omega Project will apply the technology most appropriate for the organic cultivation, ecological conservation, and industrial processing in order to preserve the high quality of oil, obtaining furthermore, operational advantages, profits, improve the quality of life of the farmers and a good environmental impact.

The Omega Project currently cultivates 1,000 hectares, but will eventually develop 200,000 hectares of INCA INCHI associated with the reforestation of the deforested zones of the Amazon planting native trees to be used to harbor the INCA INCHI plant and obtain crops of seeds for their food value, medicines, aromatics, colorants, and biocides for sanitary plant control of agricultural cultivation against plagues by insects and parasites in rural zones as well as in cities. Due to its magnitude, it can provide work for 800,000 workers directly and indirectly in agriculture, industry, and services. The Omega Project is of great environmental interest, as well as social, for the health of Peru and the world.

IMPORTANCE OF OMEGA 3 IN HEALTH AND EATING

Medical science warns us more and more with greater emphasis on the convenience of eating less animal fats to reduce the grade of cholesterol in the blood to avoid risk of acquiring heart diseases, and a constant inclination is observed towards a greater consumption of non saturated vegetable oils. INCA INCHI oil in comparison with the other eating oils possesses a smaller content of saturated oils. Taking into consideration the advantages of products enriched with Omega 3, and because food for human consumption that contains it is relatively low, the scientists recommend the consumption of products enriched with Omega 3. The enrichment is carried out adding Omega 3 in the process of elaboration of the foodstuffs, but before hand, logically, it is necessary to produce and extract the Omega 3 from natural sources. The INCA INCHI oil is the richest in alpha linolenic fatty acids, Omega 3.
