Personal Security and Safety
Living in a big city can be dangerous in any part of the world. Lima is no exception although statistics show that violent crime is not a major concern here. However, it is important to exercise caution and common sense when dealing with matters of security.
In this regard Mr. Steve Jensen, General Manager of Tech Cominco Peru, S.A. has written a protocol for personal security and safety that includes many suggestions for avoiding problems. In referring to the Protocol he has stated: "Although some of the recommendations may seem extreme, they are meant to be a comprehensive list covering all possibilities and not as an attempt to cause fear... Most of the safety tips involve common sense and can help prevent assaults and robberies. If one can avoid being an easy or obvious target, chances are that nothing will happen.”
For those with long experience living in Lima, many of the suggestions will seem to be excessive, even paranoiac. Others may find useful suggestions that they can use in their daily life. The Protocol has four parts: Personal/Daily Routine, Residence, Driving, and Public Transportation. For those who wish to review the Protocol, go to www.living in Peru.com where it is available as a pdf.
