International Christian School
of Lima
ICSL started its second semester on February 13. As an American international school (over 75% of our students are from North America) we run on a North American calendar so this return from summer break is one of the earliest in Lima. This early return allows our families to take 6 weeks off during the North American summer.
March is a busy month for our students as they prepare for our annual Science Fair on March 31st at 1:00pm. All the students will be displaying their science experiments in Chase Hall, Union Church, until 3:30pm. Local judges will be there and awards will be given for the elementary and secondary divisions. Everyone is welcome to come and encourage our young scientists.
ICSL received candidate status for accreditation with the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) last semester. We are now starting the self-study as we prepare for a joint visit from the two organizations in November 2007.
San Silvestre School
Record Results - 2006 got off to a flying start for San Silvestre with the best examination results on record. International Baccalaureate students have enjoyed direct entry to universities, credit hours and scholarships. The average of almost 36 points and 23% of the cohort gaining over 40 points are outstanding achievements.
Infrastructure Plans - Classes start on 6th March. The Infant Section has had an extensive renovation building programme to accommodate the increase in incoming students and to modernize the infrastructure.
Mandarin in the Curriculum - An exciting step has been taken to include Mandarin in the Senior electives programme. If anyone is interested in reading why San Silvestre has taken this step, the forthcoming Newsletter (which will be posted on the school's web-site) will highlight the arguments. Two groups have already chosen the programme which will lead to the University of Cambridge IGCSE examinations and a competence in both spoken and character-written Mandarin.
Community Service and Networking - Thanks to the student exchange of San Silvestre with Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, awareness of stark realities in areas of Peru has increased. As part of the exchange, the Deerfield students alongside San Silvestre students work in a home for women and children, Villa Martha. Thanks to the efforts of a group of enthusiastic participants, over $6,000 has been raised for the work rehabilitation programme. Well done, Deerfield!
With the proceeds from the Calendar sale, the Form V students will be able to fund the Maras project to buy materials for their artisan work. The students incorporate this community project as part of their Prom Trip in Cusco. Thanks to all who purchased the calendar.
