The Stairway, before and after |
Negotiating tricky climbs and descents along the spidery paths that lead up to the homes that crowd the hillsides on the outskirts of the city is a daily reality for hundreds of thousands of the poorest residents of Lima. Depending on the season, these rocky, crumbling paths are either dusty or muddy, and they can be downright dangerous to walk upon, especially for the elderly, the very young, or parents cradling young children in their arms.
In December, the ACAP had the opportunity to fund the construction of a stairway that replaces a precarious dirt path leading up to the hillside community of “Cerrito Rico” in the district of San Juan de Lurigancho.
In this case of community outreach, the ACAP partnered with the NGO “Food for the Hungry International,” which organized volunteer labor from the community of “Cerrito Rico,” bought materials, and contracted a foreman to build the 30-meter stairway. The stairway was built in the month of December and took a week-and-a-half to complete. It is now being used on a daily basis by more than 200 people of all ages who use it to get to their homes, safely and quickly.
