2005 American Community Softball League Season Draws to a Close
By Fred Brems, ACSL Commissioner

It was a day of excellent softball on the final day of the tournament as the top four teams from the regular season squared off to carry away the coveted (albeit actually really ugly) ACSL Trophy (it's the thought that counts).

In the 9:00 game, Fetzer overcame the power hitting of DEA in a not-too-defensive but exciting and very close back-and-forth struggle - 22-19. The 10:30 game saw Fetzer go down 11-4 to the storming Ninos who, without a doubt, have come together as the best Nino team in at least the last 12 years.

In the High Noon face-off with #1 seed AID, the quest ended for the Ninos after a bottom of the 6th two-run homer brought AID from one run down to take an 8-7 lead into the last-chance top-of-the-seventh inning for the Ninos. The meat of the order was up for the Ninos, and the vocal Nino fans cheered themselves hoarse, but it was not to be, as AID held the Ninos scoreless to end up as both the Season and the Tournament Champs.

Each team has lots of positives to look back at and build on for next season - the Ninos will have everyone coming back, which is scary for all the other teams. Markham ended the season with a sweep of a triple-header. The Senators won a close game in the tourny, for their fourth win of the season, and then lost a close one - but what an improvement over last year when there were NO Senator wins!!! The Guardians followed the Senators path in the tournament, winning then losing close, but they certainly left the field with the taste of victory in their mouths as well.

What can you say about the power of DEA, who, though rollercoasterish, are one exciting and fun team to watch (watching is always preferable to playing them!) and Fetzer, a long-time stalwart of the league - one of the founding pillars - continues to present a fun and worthy opponent on the field and to be old friends off the field.

AID, with a different definition of "meat of the order" than the Ninos, will be back to defend and looks forward to the fun and camaraderie that the game offers - surely the reason we are all there.
