Still on the Air after all those Years
By Marie Ottiker
When I first saw him I was surprised that he was so tall. I had seen him only in photos where he was sitting down! He was dressed in sports clothes and he carried himself in a way that belied his 73 years. We had a pleasant and amicable chat in which he told me that he had been born in Peru of a Peruvian mother and an English father. He remembered visiting his English grandmother in the town of Tonbridge Wells, where he had an uncle who was Bishop of Kent.
He spent his childhood and studied in Peru where he married and has two sons and a daughter, and now grandchildren. When he was a boy there was always music in the house and even then he knew he wanted to work in some musical field. He started a collection of records when he was ten years old and much of his pocket money went to buy them. Today his wife is at her wits end as where to house them all. Because of the necessities of life as he grew into adulthood, he held other jobs, but in the end radio, and everything connected with it, became his life. He has been on the air in Peru for 21 years now, as a commercial and news commentator, master of ceremonies, and a gift to those of us who like “easy listening” music. He also had a stint on television as anchor man reading the news.
The music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the voices of Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbara Streisand, the vocal groups and the Big Bands of the 40s and 50s - music that to some will be strange and to others nostalgic - is always an oasis amid the prevalent racket of the average local radio programs. As well as the boleros, ballads and bossa nova, you will hear in this delightful program, touches of slow rock, and jazz for those who don't want to get too relaxed.
The name of this experienced radio man is Roy Morris. He and his knowledgeable commentaries on “Ritmos y Estilos” can be heard on on CPN radio (next to RPP) at 90.5 FM, every Sunday from 6 to 7 p.m. Happy listening!
