Rotary Club
Rotary Club Lima Sunrise is the Latest Star in Rotary Sky
Chartered only last May, the new Rotary Club Lima Sunrise is definitely making waves in District 4450 (Lima-Callao) of Rotary. With 33 members, it is already one of the largest clubs in the district. Many members are ACAP members as the club is the only one in South America which speaks English, also the only-breakfast club in the region.
The club has already received two $15,000 projects, Matching Grants financed by American clubs, the Rotary Foundation, and the local club, to provide drinking water to two small communities in the Amazon basin. They are in process of applying for a grant for 12 mechanical cows to be distributed and maintained by Dream Center, a local faith- based NGO, in the Lima area as well as other parts of Peru. Each cow provides most economically 100 liters each hour of delicious, nutritious soya milk to very poor kids and adults in each community. More cows are planned.
Other projects include amplification of a Health Center in Flores de Villa, a very poor community of San Juan de Miraflores; a knitting and sewing factory in Los Olivos; and a project to reduce the incidence of missing and abused children, part of an international network. Still other projects are in the works.
The club meets every Thursday (except holidays) for breakfast at 7:15 AM at the Marriott Hotel. The club prides itself on ending its meetings promptly at 8:30 AM and this allows time for an interesting speaker to discuss general topics as well as Rotary opportunities. Social outings are also held, as companionship and service are the twin aims of Rotary.
