ACAP celebrates
1st and 4th of July

Under mostly clear skies, ACAP members and their many friends celebrated another successful Canadian and the U.S. Independence Day Picnic on Saturday, June 25th at the grounds of the United States Embassy in Lima.

The British North America Act of July 1st, 1867 which brought Canada independence, and the Declaration of Independence signed on July 4th, 1776 were reason enough to celebrate Independence Day for both neighbours.

An enthusiastic public found an assortment of kiosks offering food that included the traditional hotdogs and hamburgers, gourmet Italian, Spanish paella, Mexican, Japanese, et. al., as well as a great assortment of home-made goodies sponsored by different international church organizations. The quality hotels made great hosts, as well as the airlines, help organizations, and language schools, which offered guidance to the interested participants.

Beverages played a big role. as the big brands competed with Half Yards of beer and warm and sweet soya milk promoted by the new Lima Sunrise Rotary Club.

Highlighting the big event was a variety of music, including the Roosevelt School Jazz Band, William Luna with indigenous sounds, Laura Vargas singing folk songs with her guitar, Lucho Quequezana with his Andean ensemble, and finally, TK, the rock group that performed on the soundtrack for the recent movie, “Pirates of Callao.”

What created a lot of interest, after having been absent during many picnics, were the family races and competition that included Spin Around the Bat, Three Legged races between parents and offspring, and finally a huge tug of war between a smirky U.S. team that licked their chops hautily as an apparently meek Canadian team steadily pulled their southern neighbours across the finish line. Luckily, the British Ambassador was present to verify the final puff and pull.

No picnic is complete without the traditional fireworks, and this year was no exception. The sky around Monterrico was filled with the most spectacular array of fireworks that would even make Disneyworld raise an eyebrow. Quite a party!
