School News

Colegio Peruano Británico

On Saturday June 18th we will celebrate Father's Day with a Family Sports Festival. The event begins at 8 a.m., and is always well-attended by enthusiastic fathers who want to compete for their school House and to demonstrate their youthful energy. Students are preparing a show that will express their musical talents too, and there will be a Karate display. A highlight of the morning will be our first Aerothon competition. Above all it's a day that we celebrate to recognize everything that fathers do for us. It's a day of hospitality and entertainment for the one who encourages us to seek the best in life: Dad!

On July 1st and 2nd, Colegio Peruano Británico will be host to the 10th International Congress of the Asociacion Peruana de Profesores de Ingles (APPI). The theme this year is “Teaching English and Values: looking for a better world.” The keynote speaker is Graham Hall who is Senior Lecturer in the English Language Centre at Northumbria University, Newcastle, England.

The APPI conferences are a great place to meet enthusiastic English teachers and to network with people from all over Peru and beyond. Participants will rub shoulders with presenters from universities in Peru and overseas. The conference will demonstrate the growth in the network of English teachers that has taken place in Peru in recent years.

Winter Camp 2005 - selecting a Winter Camp for your children deserves a good deal of thought. We offer the opportunity for children to participate in a variety of fun activities in a safe environment that fosters camaraderie. Among the activities our program offers are: Soccer, Tennis, Wall Climbing, Basketball, Field Hockey, a Preschool/Kindergarten class and English as a Second Language. The program will run from July 5 - 22, Monday through Friday. For more information please call Ms. Nora Márquez (tel. 435-0890, ext. 4008) or send her an email (nmarquez@amersol.edu.pe)

IB and AP exams have concluded, art, drama and musical productions have closed, our seniors have graduated, and our school year finishes after the end of June. Good-bye and best wishes to our families departing Peru and also to our superintendent Fred Wesson. Please give a warm welcome to Dr. Carol Kluznik, Roosevelt's new superintendent coming to Peru with husband Ryan Ashley, who will work in the High School. Enjoy a wonderful winter break!

International Christian School of Lima

June is upon us and we are starting to wrap up our school year. ICS Lima is on the North American school calendar, so this is graduation month for us. Our seniors will be leaving us and have been accepted at Pace University, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, John Brown University, Syracuse University, Boston University, University of Miami, FL, University of Tulsa, Fordham University, and Northeastern University.

Our graduation ceremony is open to the public and will be held on June 23 at 6:30 pm in the sanctuary of the Union Church. A reception honoring our seniors will be held in the Chase Hall after the ceremony.

Newton College

As was mentioned in the last Newsletter, we plan to launch an Adult Education Programme starting in June. The courses on offer will include: English, French, Spanish as a foreign language, Japanese, Computing and Yoga. The classes will be 2 or 3 times a week, Monday to Friday, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. More information and details about registration will appear on our web site (www.newton.edu.pe)

The Copa Newton begins on Saturday, May 28th at which 50 different teams will participate in volleyball and football. We hope to see a lot of you there supporting one of the teams and enjoying the fun atmosphere.

The senior school play will take place on June 30th, July 1st and 2nd. This year the Drama Club will be performing an adaptation of “El Rabdomante” by Sebastian Salazar Bondy. More information will appear on our web site.

Matriculation for Kinder 2006 will be open throughout June. Parents who would like to know more about the process should ask for an appointment with the Headmaster.

San Silvestre School

San Silvestre's Kermesse will take place on Saturday 2nd July, so please come along for what promises to be a day full of activities. As always, the 'tombola' will be a great attraction with amazing prizes. There will be shows throughout the day, plenty to eat and drink, games for children and a rock concert in the evening.

Ex - Pupils' Lunch will be held on Saturday 21st May, with two promotions celebrating in particular, those who left school 50 years ago and those who left 25 years ago. Of course, the lunch is for all ex-pupils. If you have not yet got your ticket, please contact the Association at 241-3334 extension 188.

“Ponte Pilas” Campaign -- Three years ago a group of pupils, very interested in environmental conservation, began a battery recycling campaign. The project expanded and is now in the hands of the Student Council. In 2004, 20,000 batteries were collected in only a couple of months.

“Ponte Pilas” has extended beyond the borders of San Silvestre: in coordination with the Education Office of the Miraflores Municipality, the 22 schools involved in the School Mayors programme were invited to participate. To this end, the International Baccalaureate CAS pupils have prepared the boxes that will be delivered to each of these schools this week. The campaign will close on 4th June in San Silvestre, where the first school environmental fair will be held in celebration of Earth Day. The properly encapsulated batteries will be transported by the Municipality and disposed of in a sanitary fill.

Our intention is to heighten the awareness of school children and the public in general about the hazardous nature of batteries. So don't throw your batteries away any more, please bring them to San Silvestre!

Theatre -- San Silvestre's annual theatre production this year will be held on Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June and will be a pot-pourri of musicals, combining acting, singing, dancing and orchestra. It promises to be a lively evening's entertainment.
