Colegio Peruano Britanico to host
International Baccalaureate Training Courses

Today there is a universally recognized high school diploma taught by 1,468 schools around the world in 119 countries. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma has been designed by some of the best international educators and it is accepted by almost all universities round the world as an entrance qualification, for advanced credits and the award of scholarships. Founded in 1968, there are now 200,000 senior school students involved in the Diploma programme around the world. Fourteen schools in Peru offer this curriculum.

The purpose of the International Baccalaureate Diploma is to develop inquisitive, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Teachers encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and life-long learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

From September 15 to 17, teachers will come from all over Latin America for training at the Colegio Peruano Britanico. Colleagues from this hemisphere will study, plan and share ideas. The school will play host to nine different subject area trainings, presented in English and Spanish. The range of courses includes Spanish Literature, History, Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Visual Arts, Music and the service and creativity element.

Markham College

In March, Markham College was chosen to be the official Latin American Representative of the London College of Music (LCM). As official representative, Markham is responsible for co-ordinating and administering all levels of the LCM examinations at Markham and other local schools in Lima.

The Programme will begin officially in 2006. All Heads of Music, teachers and students from other schools interested in the Programme may contact Sra Ramirez for further information at: ramirece@markham.edu.pe.

Newton College

We're sorry that we failed to inform you of the course on Fitotherapy and Medicinal Plants that was held at our school from April 7-9. It was extremely interesting and so we shall be repeating some of the talks in May and June (very shortly, we will publish the exact dates on our school web site www.newton.edu.pe)

It was fascinating to learn about the excellent medicinal and nutritive properties of such plants as garlic, parsley, maca, cat's claw, etc. It was also reassuring to learn that Peru is at the forefront of investigation in this field of study. The course was organized by the Instituto de Fitoterapia Americana who have agreed to hold more talks for parents of schoolchildren. We will keep you informed.

In May we plan to launch our Adult Education Programme. Our own parents have asked if we can teach them certain courses and we have decided to extend the invitation to the parents of the other English medium schools. We will offer the following courses: English, French and Spanish as foreign languages (different levels), computing (different Microsoft Office programmes) and yoga. If there is interest in other courses, we will try to offer them too.

The classes will be at least twice a week, from 3.30 5.00 p.m., and there will be a small monthly charge. We will post precise details on our web site very shortly. Our intended starting date is Monday, May 23rd.

San Silvestre School

The Government is likely to declare a holiday Monday May 2nd, and our Kermesse was scheduled for Saturday 30th April. We would prefer to avoid what would be a long weekend, and so the new date for the San Silvestre Kermesse is Saturday 2nd July.

Ex - Pupils' Lunch - Saturday 21st May. If you are an alumnus, please contact the Association (exalumna@sansilvestre.edu.pe or see the web page www.sansilvestre.edu.pe) for your ticket and join the ever-increasing number of ex-pupils who gather each year to reminisce over an excellent lunch with a raffle and the show by the Class celebrating its 25th year reunion. There will also be a very special get-together for those celebrating 50 years!
