Expatriate Journal
Old Resident Immigration Visa Booklet (Carné de Extranjería)
is Valid Only until February 28, 2005

According to Ministerial Resolution N° 1743-2004-IN-1601, published in the Official Gazette El Peruano on September 12, 2004, the Ministry of Interior resolved to extend the validity of the old-style, manual Resident Immigration Visa booklets until February 28, 2005.

The General Directorate of Immigration and Naturalization (DIGEMIN) has announced that the last working day of next February will be the final date for foreign residents in Peru to trade in their old, manual Resident Immigration Visa booklets for the new modernized Resident Immigration Identification Card (Carné de Extranjería Mecanizado). The General Director of Immigration and Naturalization, Retired General Diómedes Hernán Díaz Horna also announced that DIGEMIN is now assisting foreign residents to change their old carné for the new one, and recommended that they don't delay in undertaking this task at the central offices of Peru's Immigration Service at Av. España 734 in Breña.

The requirements to change your old carné for the new one are as follows: present Form F-007-A; receipt for the right to undertake this procedure (S/. 41.00); and a receipt from the Banco de la Nación for payment of the annual immigration fee (tasa de extranjería: $15 for residents, $20 for immigrants). Persons who fall within the scope of Article 3 of Supreme Decree N° 206-83-EFC are exonerated from paying this annual fee.

Prior to making the exchange to the new carné, one must be able to show that their annual payments of the immigration fee are up-to-date, and the old carné must show their current address. In the case that the old carné has been lost or stolen, a copy of the official police report must be presented.

The exchange for the new Resident Immigration Identification Card is obligatory. All interested parties are urged not to wait until the last moment in order to avoid crowds and permit a rapid and orderly provision of the new Identification Card. -- Translation: JR
