Hogar Clinica "San Francisco de Asis"
Nestled in a house close to a park in Chaclacayo near the Central highway is a house that serves temporarily as home to a group of special children. There, American pediatrician Dr. Anthony Lazarra - who founded Hogar Clinica San Francisco de Asis twenty years ago - harbors an average of 40 sick children of all ages who need constant specialized help and cannot be at their parents' homes while they are recovering from one of a series of medical disorders.
They always need support in the way of toys, clothing, food, sheets, blankets and anything you could imagine. Volunteers are also in demand to hold babies and feed them. Presently there are at least 11 babies, who need tender loving care. At times, blood donations are needed for children about to have surgery.
Some children need complex heart surgery, cleft lip and palate surgery, corneal transplants, and some are there for such things as malnutrition. Hogar San Francisco also cares for children on an out-patient basis. When the interred children are recovered enough they return to their families.
Much of the donated money comes from the Tampa area of Florida, where Tony was raised. The ACAP also provides assistance to Hogar San Francisco, and a group of our members have formed a support group known as Tony's Kids.
For more information, call Connie Estrada at 467-1033 in the evening after 6PM. The website for the home is www.villalapazfoundation.org. Dr. Lazarra´s telephone number is 497-1868. This organization is well worthy of all the support you are able to give. Thank you.

Operation Smile is a charity that raises money for operations to correct facial malformations in children. One of the major annual fund raising events for this organization is "Art for a Smile" - held this year on October 2 at the Marriott Hotel in
Miraflores - in which children from the community sign up to paint aside a local artist. The painting is then auctioned. If the painting is not purchased at auction, parents can buy the work for a minimum of $500, though typically donors pay at least $750 for each art work, as that is the cost of one operation.
