It was early January 2004; the beginning of the Peruvian summer. I was waiting impatiently in a hot car parked outside the Claro mobile phone office in San Isidro. Jaime was inside trying to find out why our phones were blocked. It was just one of several annoying details that demanded attention before heading down to our beach house; the land of sun and fun. After that we still needed to load up on groceries in preparation for the party next weekend.

Kindness is another one of those cultural differences that we Anglos notice here in Peru. Kindless manifests itself in different ways in different cultures. With only four years in Peru, I can hardly speak as an expert, but I can speak for what experience I have had and from my previous 18 years in Honduras.

DB Peru started in 2003 as a healthcare charity, with the delivery of medicines and provision of clinics in the jungle villages. But because our visits were every 3 months, we realized that in order for the people to have better access to healthcare, we needed to help them know how to take care of themselves when no healthcare provider was available.

I have been volunteering for over a year now every Saturday at Hogar Divino Jesus in the area of Pueblo Libre at a non profit association called AVINABIF. I am part of the “Mamas Voluntarias.” This facility houses approximately 100 babies and children from 1 month to 4 year old toddlers.

Religious holidays are especially appropriate times to demonstrate strongly held beliefs in a “golden rule” that encourages kindness to others. A random act of kindness is an act, initiated without request, done by a proactive person to assist or care for another person or in some cases even an animal or a space.
